Yes Team Can

The crowd was there for The Electors' Action Movement Burnaby's Gala fundraiser.

"Old Burnaby" was out in force as were representatives from the federal Conservative and Liberal parties. Potential candidates were there, even if most of them are potential candidates for MLA and MP such as long-shot Burnaby-Douglas Tory candidate hopeful Salomon Rayek.

In civic circles, the worst kept secret of the night is the likelihood of a lot of people at the bun-toss being asked to put "Lee Rankin for Mayor" signs up in their yards come November 1. The rest of the TEAM may not be in place yet but it is looking like winning three seats on council and two at school board would not be out of reach.

The civic centre-right forces that make up the new TEAM Burnaby have an uphill battle ahead of them over the next five months. With issues such as Gateway, the computer system and the oil spill to campaign on, TEAM will have something to say each week and might be able to give Mayor Derek Corrigan and the Burnaby Citizens' Association a bit of a scare and take a few seats back.

Having Lee Rankin running for the mayor for TB is the fastest way to retire Lee himself and put TB back as the opposition.

The oil spill incident is not one that was caused by Corrigan.

It could have easily happend if Team Burnaby had won in 2005.

In Burnaby there are no 'potential' MLA's except for
the Edmonds riding.

Team Burnaby has alot of ways to go yet before it becomes worthy of the voters to consider.

One fundraiser attended by those who would vote TB anyway isn't going to cut it.

True, the oil spill incident was not caused by Corrigan but a smart politician would have said to the media we must look at all the evidence before laying blame on someone. Unfortunately, Corrigan laid blame on Kinder Morgan even though it may have been the construction crew contracted by the city of Burnaby who was at fault.

Kinder Morgan went out of their way to help the residences affected by the spill. It was a good gesture and public relations showing on their part.

On the other hand, currently, residences affected by the spill are suing the city of Burnaby which in turn indirectly places blame on the mayor.

Compensation could be in the millions.

Team Burnaby needs a good nomination fight like we have seen in Vancouver.

Youth vs. Middle aged
Woman vs. Man
Coloured/Ethnic vs. Anglo

Let the sign ups begin and may the best PERSON win.

Are you ready? Are you ready? Lets get it on.

Forget it for now.

Come back and see us after
Labour Day.

and bring us voters some candidates that are worthy of voting for rather than a a bunch of perpetual whiners about everything Corrigan and the BCA does and people who keep seeking civic council and never win.

Enjoy the summer.

Of course it won't do everything. But it will put the lie to those who hold news conferences to suggest Team Burnaby is dead/ no one supports TB anymore/ and it's just one man's toy. And it will certainly put an end to anyone who thinks there is no interest in running for TB.

Was "the crowd" more than 200 people?

Were Harry Bloy, Patty Sahota, Richard Lee and John Nuraney in attendance?

What about Sam Rakhra, Marc Dalton, Mike Redmond and James Moore?

And what of the former TBers, Garth, Gary and Barbara?

Enquiring minds want to know. Do tell, oh omnipotent webmaster.

It will also end any comments that TB can't raise funds. President Leung announced that almost $30,000 was raised after expenses last night. Not bad.

Regretably Garth Gary and Barbara were unable to make it. I think I saw Sam R.

Harry Bloy and Richard Lee are out of town at a caucus retreat somewhere.

Harry Bloy and John N have safe seats - don't need to be there.

Richard Lee does not have a safe seat and needs help from wherever he can get it.

Patti Sahota?

"The oil spill incident is not one that was caused by Corrigan."

True, but did the City of Burnaby do everything possible to make sure it could not happen. For example, did the city make sure it only hired contractors who have adequate insurance? Does the city itself have adequate insurance if it is found even partly at fault?

Someone is going to be asked to pay this whopping big bill and I doubt that it will be Kinder Morgan at the end of the day.

"Harry Bloy and John N have safe seats - don't need to be there."

It is a fundraiser for TB, FYI.
Why is that important, because it is TB that is mainly seeking help, not the other way around. If they have decided to stay home, it is likely that they are having issues with the party's current strategy. If TB cannot get their approval on its mayoral candidate, TB will not have enough support to win the next election. That cannot be more obvious.

Weren't both Harry and John at a Liberal caucus retreat in Cranbrook BC? Tough to be in two places at once. I don't think anyone should read too much into their not being there. Barack Obama wasn't there either.

"Richard Lee does not have a safe seat and needs help from wherever he can get it."
Richard Lee is there to miminize the division between Garth Evans and Lee Rankin. Richard is leaning towards unity on the council side and would like to see Garth Evans re-elected. But he has not obligation to Lee Rankin, and actually other than some party exectuives, no one is obligated to Lee Rankin. Those who do not approve of him including Garth Evans have already suggested to ask Harry Bloy to run for the seat. Patti Sahota? In terms of unity, it would be obvious who the three MLA incumbents would rather see representing TB. And given how Lee Rankin did not even see Gordon Campbell as one of his friends, I wish him good luck in getting approvals from the BCLIB machine in the city.

"Tough to be in two places at once. "
What is more important, caucus retreat or civic elections. If TB executives cannot even get them to show up, what chances will they have against BCA who will have endorsement coming from the two heavy weight Burnaby MPs. Without a candidate that can unite the four BCLIB machines, TB will continue to stay in the opposition, more divided than ever.

Interesting. That $30,000 is probably already assigned to the political hacks who want their hands on it. Rmember, TB paid out money to too many people which added to the debt. Some people got too much, and others should have received anything at all.

$30,000 will get four political hacks from Harry Bloy's coveted
talent pool.

Or, forget that and put that $30,000 where it belongs. In a lease to a store front, and forget about paying anyone.

Say to those who have their hand out:

"Okay fine. You deliver us a majority council, and you'll get paid. Get us our Candidate in the mayor's office and earn an extra 15%." You get paid after the election expenses, not before.

We're not here to earn you a living.

If ya don't deliver, we don't deliver the cheque.

This "TEAM sucks because they pay greedy political hacks too much" dialogue has gone on for way too long. Its boring. And its incorrect. The two money sucking hacks that fleeces TEAM Burnaby for $15k last time are long gone. They're not around, they're not active, and they're likely not even wanted.

The TEAM Burnaby of today consists of people committed to ridding city hall of the BCA, not people trying to get rich.

here is what i have gathered so far;
the dinner was sold out. MLA Richard Lee stayed till the end and enjoyed working the room.
Nuraney had sold everal tickets but was at a different event downtown with the premier.Nuraney sent a note of support for the event.
Harry Bloy had bought a couple of tickets and sent his representatives as he could not make it.
does that make the BCA blogger unhappy?

6/19/2008 7:31 PM

Richard usually works the room.
Harry is hoping to convince the Premier that he is deserving of a cabinet post so will
be pulling the Premier's golf bag at golf game to be held in Cranbroooks' caucus retreat.

Nothing new in all of this.

A sold out event is exactly what is supposed to happen.

$30,000. Not a bad start for a group that has had a rather bad start this year.

Keep at it. Who knows you might come up with something the voters might like.

But being a whinery isn't going to do much.

They technically had three elected candidates until Team Burnaby went nuts when two of them decided to vote with the majority of council after reviewing the subject.

Is it now Team Lee after it was Team Bloy?

Keep at it. Hopefully by mid September it will actually BE a team.

6/20/2008 5:24 PM

Actually TEAM BBY had five elected officials. 3 Councillors ( Begin, Evans and Rankin) and 2 School Trustees Helen Chang and Richard Lee. The website now only lists Lee Rankin.

6/20/2008 7:54 PM

Helen has left TB and Richard Lee is a carpet bagger and will not be re-elected. But if that is the way TB executives decide to play it, then yes, Lee Rankin can be the only candidate running under TB and the election result for TB should just about decimate the party itself, especially if Garth Evans decides to test his popularity to by running against Lee Rankin in the mayoral nomination. There is a reason that Harry and John decided to not to show up and we shall see how motivated they are really to have Lee Rankin as their mayor. Just because he is willing to be played as a pawn by both NDP and Liberals does not make him a uniter.

I too find it disturbing people trying to describe Patti Sahota's candidacy with such a sexist overtone. True, she would handily out-poll Mayor Corrigan in their images, but it is certainly more than her beauty pic that should define her. She was a cabinet minister and she was the only female Burnaby MLA from 2001 to 2008. And BCA would certainly not like to see her run, since they know Patti Sahota has just as much ambition in politics as Gabriel Yiu did, neither BCA claims as having no "ambition" since this particular ambition would very well endanger their grip in power in the Corrigans. I however do find some of the sexist comments out of control and I hope our resident blogger will take initiative to start monitoring the posts and take action on inappropriate posts whenever possible no matter if it's foul language or sexist comments.

Not certain about homophobic but that sort of comments should certainly be condemned, just as racist comments should also be condemned, if neither have been deleted. However, we should not deter people from expressing their desire for a female ethnic mayoral candidate who is actually young for a change. I do agree, and I too would call on our resident blogger to start take his or her liberty in modifying or deleting inappropriate posts.

And one is not to forget that Mayor Sahota is just as existent as Mayor Rankin, or Mayor Bloy, since neither has announced their intention to run. But let us admit it, the affirmation policy is practiced on the party that BCA supports and it will be difficlt pin no matter if it's racism, sexism, or ageism on defining Patti Sahota's candidacy.

Well possibily if you spent more time on real campaigning rather than Patti Sahota "

But let us admit it, the affirmation policy is practiced on the party that BCA supports and it will be difficlt pin no matter if it's racism, sexism, or ageism on defining Patti Sahota's candidacy.

The affirmation is a policy of the NDP, not the BCA.

The only way to define Patti Sahota's candidacy is "non-existant"
