Les is less

Solicitor General John Les is stepping aside as news breaks that he has been under investigation for the past nine months. Attorney General Wally Oppal will fill the post until the next cabinet shuffle, expected in June, at which time a new minister will be installed until Les is cleared of wrongdoing.

Burnaby remains the largest municipality in the province without a full cabinet minister.

Didnt we have one right before the last election? There's gotta be better portfolio than resort development this time.

But there is no doubt in my mind if Harry Bloy can elect BCL MLA'S across Burnaby ridings, he will no doubt be in the cabinet in no time.

Why would Burnaby want a new cabinet minister?

The last full-fledged minister from this city just had one of her greatest programs initiated. The Carbon Tax was originally proposed by one-time NDP Environment Minister, and former Burnaby-Willingdon MLA, Joan Sawicki.

Harry Bloy is far from being Cabinet Material.

But post politicos know that Harry has been busy with his efforts for just that reason to get a Cabinet Post.

Why would he get a Cabinet Post and not Richard Lee who is currently a Parliamentary Secretary which is a step down from
a full Cabinet Minister.

Burnaby would have a Cabinet Minster if there was a person good enough for it.

Harry did not elect BCL MLA's.

He only got himself elected.

In fact one of his campaign friends fried the BCL election in Burnaby Edmonds causing Patti Sahota to lose her seat.

Looking at the caliber of BCNDP candidates across the city, is any of the four candidates close to cabinet material comparing to Harry Bloy.

It is difficult to score cabinet posts against the backdrop of Campbell appointees. Premier has to certainly look hard for a star candidate in our city to unseat the lone Burnaby NDP MP. I am looking forward to being shocked by Campbell's cabinet material star candidate appointment, no matter it's asking chancellor of SFU to step down or giving a defeated BCA Mayor's a second chance to take on Raj Choujan.

You're also forgetting one thing.

Geography has alot to do with who is in Cabinet and who is not.

Does Burnaby really merit a Cabinet Minister? I'd say no, since Burnaby is not a unique entity as other parts of the Province including Surrey.

Harry Bloy hasn't even made Parliamentary Secretary. It would not be unexpected to see one of the Parliamentary Secretaries moved up to a Cabinet post since that's usually the way to go.

Richard Lee and John N. have a better chance to be in Cabinet than does Harry, since Harry hasn't done anything outstanding.

The other thing is leadership. Has Harry shown leadership? No.

That is one of the flaws in this FPTP electoral system. Another flaw is the fact that the recent resignation of John Les if charged for corruption may mean a wipe-out of BCL from the city.

But the problem in Burnaby is that BCL simply could not find cabinet prospects from a city that has been dominated by NDP for this long. IF the most prominent non-NDP figure is Lee Rankin, true political talents are not going to risk taking on NDP in FPTP system as being nominated by BCL is the same as taking on the entire NDP clan.

However, if the three MLA's we have can win another term to go into a third term, based on their loyalty since 2001 wave make them worthy of being picked as cabinet ministers. Richard Lee and John N. are probably more competent than Transportation Minister who is looking likely to succeed the Premier, but competence really does not have much to do with cabinet posts if you realize that Carole James, a teacher, may govern the province and our Carole Taylor, a broadcaster, has close to no credibility in economy.

Hmmm...Pritam Saggu, a BCA/NDP member, connected to Derek Corrigan, the Burnaby NDP, and a member of the "independent" board of variance is accused of offering to "get business done" and peddle influence higher-ups at Burnaby city hall. I wonder when the mainstream media will wake up to this NDP scandal. At least, John Les is doing the right thing and stepping aside. Why hasn't Derek Corrigan asked his hand-selected appointee to step aside? Are these allegations being seriously investigated by the Corrigan controlled city hall?
Les does the right thing but the NDP likes to cover up its own doggy doo.

Yes, real estate development is the common denominator between the former Chilliwack Mayor stepping down and the developing influence peddling scandal in the variance committee in Burnaby.

3/30/2008 1:37 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

And the expansion of both scandals may be damaging to both governing parties in the provincial and local races. And if the mayor decides to step down. If the police decides to begin investigating into such matters, it may force Dan Johnson to take the office assuming both the chair of finance committiee and the office of the city mayor with one party councilor quitting away from losing majority on the council. That will likely push the city into chaos as what happened in Port Moody and trying to get political on this matter, in the eyes of the electorates, will not be something wise to do.

It does not concern the voters if our mayor decides to appoint people he trusts to various offices he has available. But it is certainly getting harder for politicans to get away with many things, and indicting a people in office these days on corruption charges is not something that is as shocking anymore since the voters will rather take the matter into their own hands come election time.

Only those who are in Team Burnaby are questioning the power they have awarded Mayor Corrigan.

It is up to the voters decide whether they want Corrigan or someone else.

Team Burnaby doesn't exclusively matter in the equation.

Hopefully they will come up with something that the voters could use rather than perpetual criticism from a few within.

Amazing...the apologists for Corrigan and the NDP while the bloggers get worked up about John Les who did the right thing and step aside. Twenty-five ordinary citizens are brave enough to petition against Corrigan's stinky patronage appointment to the board of variance who offers to peddle influence at city hall but it's no big deal to the Corrigan fan club. What a double standard...why does Carol James have a lot to say about John Les but nothing to say about her unethical Brutus in Burnaby?

3/31/2008 6:32 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nothing in regards to Corrigan has been proven. It's conjecture and obviously too many in Team Burnaby have been spending time being critical.

It's too easy to be critical. It's far harder to be positive and actually come up with something new, but Team Burnaby obviously wants to take the easy route.

3/31/2008 9:20 PM

Nothing about John Les too has been proven and he has already stepped down. I dun want to drag Carol James into the discussion who is 10 times harsher on BCL than TB councilors are on BCA.

Certainly it is easy to be critical, but that is what the media does. And to many voters media is their only resource for critical information and we will soon enough see how harshly the voters will judge with various events that had happened during our mayor's reign. The "popularity" of BCA governance for decades will too soon be put to the test if its councilors do decide to fully endorse its mayor.

3/31/2008 9:45 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

So what's the big deal of Carol James being harsh on the BC Liberals?

That's her job.

if the BC Liberals can't take any heat, why are they in the kitchen?

The critical commentary from the NDP now is nothing compared to what they dished out previously.

Welcome to the beginning of real politics in B.C.

As for the BCA fully supporting its mayor, why not? Team Burnaby expects "loyalty" to its mayor candidate who ever that clown will be.

and that judgement of the voters may end up being different and the election outcome may end up being different than what some T/B people may want.

T/B is not exclusive to anything, especially good political positioning.

Harry Bloy will never be a cabinet minister. You can take that to the bank. I know that Gordo and the caucas thinks he is a buffoon. This guy dresses up in a boyscout uniform on budget day. "As for the BCA fully supporting its mayor, why not? Team Burnaby expects "loyalty" to its mayor candidate who ever that clown will be."

Who are TB councilors loyal too, no matter it's the computer-gate or gateway project, the only people these councilors are loyal to are the voters when they decide to vote against the mayor. BCA too are no less loyal especially when they defend so fiercely for the mayor, sometimes being sympathetic of an independent councilor quitting the mayor's enemy camp.

But it is up to the voters to judge. Without polls indicating how well our mayor has done in the past term, one is not so sure how much "mandate" our mayor still enjoys since his last re-election. The voters will judge if our mayor has performed better than his previous term. If not however, it is up to them to opt for new leadership. BCA and TB both want different outcomes and some may be more confident than others. But self confidence rarely matters since they are not the ones choosing the mayors. The real people that matter are the voters and they will be the ones to decide if they want to echo with TB and see change or otherwise.

Quite a few will vote for Corrigan.

A little far off on that one - 'enemy camp'..

But it is up to the voters to judge.

Without polls indicating how well our mayor has done in the past term, one is not so sure how much "mandate" our mayor still enjoys since his last re-election.

There is no "how much" the fact remains he has the mandate to govern from the time he was sworn into office in 2005
to when the next mayor is sworn into office in 2009. Polls are irrevalant in between.

"The voters will judge if our mayor has performed better than his previous term."

That's reflected in his vote count,
but if he wins a majority so what?

"If not however, it is up to them to opt for new leadership. BCA and TB both want different outcomes and some may be more confident than others."

Add arrogance from both sides and you have the total picture.

As for new leadership from Team Burnaby, it doesn't exist.

"But self confidence rarely matters since they are not the ones choosing the mayors. The real people that matter are the voters and they will be the ones to decide if they want to echo with TB and see change or otherwise.

Don't get too self confident that Team Burnaby will end up being the winner.

That may not nessesarily happen.

I suppose Corrigan does not see TB and Harry Bloy as "friends". I am certain outside politics they will continue to be friends, but come election, even your closest friends will be doing the unthinkables, just ask our last premier Ujjal Dosanjh.

I am certain our mayor has accomplished many things he has set out to do despite some small shortcomings. But is it enough to convince the voters to stay with status quo? Well, no one will ever know until the day after the election, (sometimes longer). But we will all have to respect the voters' choice if they do decide for change of leadership. No, TB has not governed as long as BCA, but if they think that they can do better than BCA, who is stopping them from nominating against the mayor incumbent.

Sam Rakhra will now take on the second most powerful NDP figure in the city. Will it help his chance for him to starting putting his hand in the local politics as Harry Bloy had done? If so, his endorsement as the federal governing party candidate for TB candidates will be a very powerful tool for both sides to capitalize. Both federal Liberal candidates have decided to do so trying to drum up anti-NDP support and both have finished second place. It may be something Sam has to do to assume the authenticity as THE anti-NDP candidate.

As long as Harry Bloy keeps his hand out of it, the goal will be achieved.

The Tories need no help from Harry in winning the riding.

TB right now is a joke. Who would possibily want their endorsement?

In fact it would be better if the Federal Liberal candidates and the Tory candidates stayed well away from Team Burnaby. They aren't the all power group that some of them think TB is.

This is crazy, I cant believe that these councilors are falling for the classic "divide and conquer" strategy.

But we have seen in Coquitlam where the governing party with a mayor endorsed completely thrown out of the city hall but for an ex-MLA and its mayor unseated by a councilor who quit the party. So it is not entirely impossible for independents on the city hall.

But I have to say that election is still more than 6 months away and it will be premature for any side to claim victories now. If Garth Evans and Gary Begin decide not to endorse TB's mayoral candidates, they should think seriously about how to get themselves elected because I do not see BCA helping these two councilors in the near future.

Raymond Leung needs to think long and hard what he needs to do next. Chairing the party of one really does not give him much privileges of staying "principled".

It may be true that "people are lining up" to become candidates according to Raymond Leung and I do think all talents should be welcomed to run under TB. But he is taking on the wrong side. Taking on three councilors at the same time in the next elections with BCA standing aside watching may very well mean BCA may win more seats than they did in 2002.

Gary Begin's departure is nowhere nearing as damaging as the only reason for Garth Evans to leave was the lack of consensus to endorse him as next mayoral candidate against Derek Corrigan. Considering an alliance with Gary Begin that he has scorned before will too make lose much credibility for Garth Evans.

. There continues to be a lack of consensus between the "right-wing" coalition, as the paper calls it, in fielding a single mayoral candidate against BCA. A split-party nomination strategy has failed in Vancouver and that should certainly not be tried again.

But I continue to think that there is still chance for reconciliation for TB. The disagreement between Lee Rankin and the rest have been on the party leadership. Losing out councilors over the prospect of gaining power should have the party members and leadership rethinking the direction they are heading towards. Despite the animosity against each other, I think the three councilors who used to sit together in council meetings opposite to BCA, now independently of each other but still opposed should have a talk much needed for their re-election regarding the party leadership and the next TB mayoral candidate pick.

Even if Garth Evans believes that seniority on city council does not grant Lee Rankin the right to run for the mayor, it is still not wise to quit the party just for this. Similar instance had happened in Vancouver where two Vancouver NPA councilors were right at each other before Gordon Campbell stepped in to parachute Carole Taylor resulting in both harmony and victory that follows while the split has lost COPE city office six months later.

Thus, for the three TB councilors to claim victories, it will be crucial for them to reach a consensus on the mayoral candidate to endorse. A candidate with independence with all sides, credibility city wide and competence recognized by the party members should be the primary requirements. Prominent figures who would like to see a transition of power such as Richard Lee should probably get involved to invite these two TB councilors and other important members back and unite the party or otherwise that transition may very well not happen. Having three sitting councilors on the team in addition to candidates discovered from their search in the multicultural community will be more powerful Lee Rankin leading a group of new talents trying to fend off two sides that want to see none of them getting anaywhere close to hall.In Victoria Alan Lowe was able to unite his support when he ran against a powerful NDP civic party in Victoria when he was first elected and after getting elected twice, during his term in office, that civic party has finally dissolved itself just last year after years in existence. I believe if Richard Lee can lead three TB councilors and the other five TB candidates against a troubled BCA whose mayor has already asked his past appointee to resign, I do think he has the chance match Alan Lowe's achievement in office in a city that has seen its minority popularity over half of the city's own

They're not expecting any help from the BCA.

Team Burnaby does not have the monopoly the talent needed for winning civic elections in Burnaby.

"But I continue to think that there is still chance for reconciliation for TB."

Slim chance at best. The damage has been done.

"Thus, for the three TB councilors to claim victories, it will be crucial for them to reach a consensus on the mayoral candidate to endorse. A candidate with independence with all sides, credibility city wide and competence recognized by the party members should be the primary requirements. "

There is only one TB Councillor,
not three.

"Prominent figures who would like to see a transition of power such as Richard Lee should probably get involved to invite these two TB councilors and other important members back and unite the party or otherwise that transition may very well not happen. "

Who would these so-called 'prominent figures' be?

After the statement that were made by Raymond Leung? Both would be fools to return to TB.

If the transition does not happen and there's a mix of BCA, independents and a TB councillor, so be it.

TB really needs to rethink itself.

4/05/2008 8:01 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

No question the party needs to reinvent itself after two councilors quit after disagreement with the party leadership. But people can disagree but things still need to be done. Certainly most would agree that three years in the government beats thirteen years in opposition, just ask Lee Rankin. And if that transition does not happen because of this minor disagreement, it is certainly not worth it. I agree that TB needs to rethink itself, how to become more united in the future and should certainly go further than asking its members to pledge allegiance.
