Burnaby money in Vancouver

While we still await to hear from The Newsleader and The Now later this week with Burnaby's election results, Vancouver's figures are already up online. Two Burnaby residents, Ray Power and Ronald Leung, sought office in the big city to our west.

Power did not spend a cent seeking the mayor's chair.

Leung of the Non-Partisan Association spent far more than most, at $49,251.75, in his council bid. One of the more interesting contribution statistics was a $15,000 candidate fee to run as a member of the NPA. (Parks board candidates and school trustee candidates paid lower fees. Mayoral candidate Sam Sullivan paid nearly a quarter million dollars in candidate fees to the NPA.) Leung raised $49,452.30 from 109 contributions.

If only other municipalities had the common sense put their filings online.

At least the NPA filed actual statements for all their candidates in addition to the elector organization. COPE and the BCA always tend to blur the lines by filing vague statements for their candidates so that no one can tell who was funding specific candidates.
And here, here to the Vancouver website for putting the stuff up.

I doubt Sam Sullivan sent a quarter of a million dollars ($250,000 to the NPA. That exceeds the annual salary for the Mayor in Vancouver.

It would be more like $20,000 approximately.

Problem with campaigns at the civic level is that there's too many people wanting to get paid to work in the campaigns and too few good volunteers so the added costs of campaigns is made up of largely of paying out insanely high money to campaign workers, when they really should be volunteering.

A good campaign manager doesn't need to be paid alot (just cover the gas and fast food.

That's the way it used to be.

It will be interesting to see where
Team Burnaby and the BCA wasted their money. My guess is on the poor quality people who insisted on getting paid.

Some interesting figures in the Bby Now.

Seems that Team Burnaby spent a bit too much on salaries.

Team Burnaby spent $56,000 on salaries for workers to the BCA's
$25,000. Seems that too manypeople in Team Burnaby got paid too much
and obviously didn't produce the results (majority council).

according to

http://vancouver.ca/ctyclerk/election2005/candidates/pdf/financing/electororg/NPA.pdf

Sullivan transferred $222,938.07 to NPA central.

Salary doesn't really factor -the combined salaries of the 27 vancouver civic politicians is about a million dollars, but Vision and NPA spent more than that each.

Sullivan probably had to pay way more than the other 26 candidates just because of the relative ease of fundraising thats inherent with running for mayor.

Probably a transfer of money raised by Sullivan's fundraiser rather from Sullivan himself.
