Breaking up the band

Is Gary Begin on his way out of TEAM? The Burnaby Now suggests that may be the case despite denials from the civic party.

Does this matter for the longtime local politician or can he survive as an independent or as a key part of a reestablished Burnaby Voters' Non-Partisan Association?

People can believe in many things. Gary Begin can believe that he can win as an independent, but is there a factual basis for that? If he does think so, then it again shows he is truly having problems with his judgment.

Gary Begin has voted with BCA many times and TB has been quite forgiving so far. It is certainly no secret that Gary is playing double sides with the voters as he knows clearly that there is no chance for him to be nominated BCA any time soon. But TB is a party of the people keeping the government accountable, and if the people decide that Gary does not deserve to be nominated for re-election, then yes, he will have to repeat what he has said about winning as an independent when he faces the voters at large and get his hypothesis tested.

Yes, he can certainly try to join another party when he loses his nomination race, but how will his decision then be viewed by the voting public will be his responsibility to bear. But I think it is no less important to state the obvious, that the best, and possibly the only way to sustain his political career is to start acting as if he is one of his own people who got him elected or otherwise face severe penalty if the voters decide to remove the mayor and his associates from power in place for a new T/B mayor with a new vision for a change.

Not again.

Whoever is posting this garbage, get a life.

Okay so the Lions lost the Western Final, but there's still the Canucks.

Even without Ohlund for 4 games.

Interesting topic - based I supose on yet another Burnaby Now article about Gary's failure to maintain even an acquaintance with those who worked so hard to get him elected. We are now into threats if his comments are accurate.

As most pols in Burnaby might recall, he ran as a candidate for BVNPA against TEAM Burnaby in 2002. At the time he was a sitting councillor and very confident of personally winning yet again although helping get others elected was never his strong suit. He had even roped in quite a few others to run and thereby help pay for his campaign. But on election day he came up short by several hundred votes. Every single BVNPA council and S/B candidate lost - not that he cared much about them. Urban legend has it he spent the next several weeks in bed groaning about the loss. I would have thought this experience might have taught him something. The olds saying is true however: you just can't teach and old dog new tricks.

I'm pretty sure T/B is shaking in its boots about Gary's threat to run as an independent. They better smarten up fast!

Hope that idiot ends up putting up lawn signs on a cold November day as an unpaid volunteer.

Some posters on this blog have serious psychological issues.

Come on. Surely this site is better used as a forum for meaningful exchange.

Most sites can get a bit testy - even petty - from time to time, but this site is over the top in both categories.

This site is over the top on many things.

The pettiness towards Gary Begin is way over the top and should end.

Someone is making a big deal over nothing in regards to how Gary Begin voted.

I disagree. It is a pretty big issue in Burnaby civic politics right now. If Gary thought he could vote this way and get away with it I guess he found out otherwise.
He will either be gone or learn a good lesson for next time.

Don't think it was a matter of 'getting away with it' despite thoughts to the contrary.

Gary would certainly (and has) learned lessons from Team Burnaby.

Team Burnaby is an example of what not to do in politics. If T/B had people who put the goals of the city first rather than their own personal goals, then it might have been much better than it is now.

Petty politics, power plays, a Board takeover led by supporters of an MLA and infighting. Not exactly the kind of civic group that is presentable to the voters.

Better to vote pick and choose rather than carrying a slate because of one MLA's insistence.

But it's your group, not the voter's

This blogger almost sounds like he is Gary's spokesman. If you know Mr. Begin so well maybe you can tell us why he ran with T/B in the first place. He knew the four main planks TEAM was going to run on. They were not a secret during the campaign. No one heard him suggest he would not follow or be bound by the three or four policies chosen by the membership at large. I don't think Mr Bloy was even a member when these policies were chosen. He is probably not a member even now.

It seems to me that it raises integrity issues when someone uses the resources of an organization in order to get elected, but then trashs it (or have one's friends do it for him) as soon as he again wins a position on Burnaby council.

What do others think?

If Harry Bloy is so all powerful, so able to get his way on all things, so deft at working behind the scenes, so capable as an oganizer, let's put him in charge of the Isaeli-palestinian problems. He could also consider taking on negotiating with the Taliban in his spare time.

If Harry was able to do that, there would be some equivalent to World War III in the Middle East.

As for the previous poster's comments, he forgets that campaign policies are tools to market to the voters. Policies change over time. The Liberals for example promised clearly that they would get rid of the GST but did not. In fact many of their MP's voted against Liberal policy on that one in approving the GST's increases and continue to do so.

Harry may not be a member of Team Burnaby, but word on the street is that he was (and still is) most certainly working behind the scenes or trying to.

As to why he ran for T/B, the history tells us that both the BVNPA and T/B came together, and it worked for a few months until some people got power hungry.

As for Mr. Begin himself, why not go and ask him directly? If you're friendly enough, he'll answer.

This is getting way over the top.

Those who keep trashing Begin and his supporters, haven't you anything better to do?

Is your life that boring that you have to trash a civic politician on something the majority of the voters aren't all that interested in anymore?

11/23/2007 3:34 PM

No - maybe some of us actually consider it important to "out" a political person who lacks integrity. A previous blogger mentioned the Liberal promise to cancel the GST. I think your example rather proves my point. They too showed a total lack of integrity - and for the same reasons as Gary. The Libs used the promise to win an election, and then quickly decided to reneg on a commitment after they won. In their case it was in a Red Book. In Gary's case it was in a signed contract. But it still comes down to the same thing.

As the old pol used to say, " Integrity young man! Integrity! That's the key! Once you can fake that you have it made."

Oi, I found its blog for google is well interesting I liked this post. It would like to speak on the CresceNet. The CresceNet is a dialed supplier of InterNet that remunerates its users for the hardwired time. Accurately this that you read, is paying you to connect. The paid supplier 20 cents for the moment of connection dialed with local linking for more than 2100 cities of Brazil. The CresceNet has a connection accelerator, that leaves its faster connection up to 10 times. Who uses broad band can also profit, is enough to register in cadastre itself in the CresceNet and when it will be to sleep to connect for dialed, it is possible to pay the ADSL alone with the money of the dialed one. In the schedules of only minute the expense with telephone is minimum and the remuneration of the generous CresceNet. If you I to want to linkar Cresce.Net(www.provedorcrescenet.com) in its blog I would be been thankful, until more and success. If is possible add the CresceNet(www.provedorcrescenet.com) in your blogroll, I thank. Good bye friend.
