I've got the bill

Billy Cunningham had MP Scott Brison in Burnaby today for a tour of Golden Boy.

Cunningham is running in Burnaby-Douglas for the third time against NDP MP Bill Siksay.

How does this get top billing?

Methinks the Liberals are trying to demonstrate solidarity with the Southeast Asian constituency.

And I bet Gary Begin tagged along, too, just like when Justin Trudeau was in town.

There is a story here. And it's got very little to do with Scott Brison sashaying through town.

Where was Garth Evans while Gary Begin, Justin Trudeau and Bill Cunningham were having so much fun reading to children at an Edmonds area school? Why hasn't Garth been given top billing on this website of Liberal heavyweights in Burnaby? The voters of Burnaby expect this situation to be rectified immediately.

And why wasnt Lee Rankin at that event?

Rankin is the one who's styling himself the new breed Liberal, not Garth.

Go Lee Go!

It simply cant be more obvious what Bill Cunningham is trying to do. By pulling the heavy weights such as Ken Dryden and Scott Brison, he is establishing himself as the authenitic alternative to Bill Siksay who is becoming more and more detached from the voters.

Has he the conservative support? The side that Harry Bloy has chosen had made that more than clear. The longer conservatives dealyed their nomination the better chance Bill Cunningham has against the NDP incumbent.

So what happens next? The federal election will occur likely during the next provincial election when both conservatives and liberals will be ready to unite un BCLIB, and it is more than likely that Bill Cunningham will attempt to consolidate support from both sides and there is no question that he will help both MLA's getting re-elected, and defeat Kathy Corrigan should she decide to challenge Harry Bloy given his effectiveness in network campaigning. He is already putting in his effort to defeat Robert Gregerson, who is by far more harder to beat than the First Lady of Burnaby.

So what happens in the next civic election? That depends. Without a mayoral candidate surfacing on the anti-BCA side, it is tough for Bill C to bid for pick sides. But I would say that Lee Rankin is the less likely candidate BCLIB will back. So it will be crucial to see how much a uniting figure the opposition side will endorse against the BCA incumbent. If a new candidate eventually upsets the mayor, that will just about remove the advantage BCA used to have in re-electing MP incumbent.

Lee Rankin was previously NDP before he mutated into a Red Liberal.

First there would not be a federal election during the time of a provincial election. Lessons were learned in 1979, and the federal election isn't due statually until October 2009. If a federal election did occur during the BC provincial one, the federal Liberals would be to blame for that one.

Harry works for Harry. Nothing else matters to him.

There is no "First Lady" in Canada.

Who ever came up with that label is incredibly dumb beyond comprehension

Why all the anger and nastiness, buddy? Suerly there is no need to call someone, "incredibly dumb beyond comprehension" for using the term first lady of burnaby. Everyone knows s/he was taking about Mrs. Corrigan.

Lighten up.

Why don't you lighten up?

"First Lady" is an American term, and has no application in Canada.

If s/he was talking about Mrs. Corrigan, use her name rather than some American label.

This is Canada, not the United States, dude.

"Harry works for Harry. Nothing else matters to him."

That depends. Conservatives still have yet to nominate a candidate, that is after all the major parties including the greens have candidates nominated. So why has Harry Bloy having so much fun around Bill Cunningham? With so many LPC prominent figures campaigning for Bill Cunningham, can Bill convince the conservatives to endorse his candidacy against Bill Siksay? He certainly did that successfully with Harry Bloy.

Next civic election will be one that will be interesting to observe. Bill C definitely has what it takes to unseat Mayor Corrigan and if he does decide to participate in this process that eventually results in a transition to power in the city hall, he is only one MP away from removing NDP presence in his home riding.

That isn't going to happen. You're dreaming a wet dream there. Harry Bloy is working both sides of the picket fence while sitting on it.

The Conservatives are indeed going to nominate a candidate to run against both Siskay and Cunningham no matter what Harry might think, since what he thinks doesn't matter to the Conservatives.

So it's now Bill Cunningham now is it? First it was Patti Sahota, then for a short time Lee Rankin and Richard Lee.

Billy Boy has no exposure to City hall and how it works.

Again you're dreaming a wet dream.

Most boys have those about girls.

1. Bill Cunningham does not have to defeat Mayor Corrigan by running against him, there are many ways to achieve that objective.

2. If this is the kind of language BCA loyalists want to use, then be afraid, because you will be rejected by the people.

Sure. All that takes is for Bill to get yet another paid political goodie from the federal Liberals once they try become government and get back to the old habits again that was a trademark of Chretien and Martin

2. If this is the kind of language BCA loyalists want to use, then be afraid, because you will be rejected by the people.

Who said it could come from BCA loyalists? Could come from a federal Liberal who doesn't like the perpetual favouritism towards Bill who got an easy ride bypassing a real nomination contest.

The people have already rejected us federal Liberals, and with Bill around, they'll reject us again in favour of Bill Siskay.

It will be tough to unseat an incumbent.

Bill won't be able to do it even with his Conservative Party friend Harry Bloy.

Nancy Harris is old news.

Garth needs another term as Councillor.

Bill Cunningham needs to start his first.

Start with Lee Rankin and go from there.

Unless that person is named Richard Lee or someone more prominent, any candidate without a united endorsement from the general opposition and Bill Cunningham will be a sure snack for Mayor Corrigan to feed on. We should know the nature of the mayoral candidate from the opposition bloc soon enough. But with so many federal heavy weight Liberals coming to Burnaby to help Bill C get elected , shall he choose to endorse locally, it is obvious how much it will mean to the candidate endorsed and the blessings from Harry Bloy and conservatives will too soon follow.

I believe the Libs and Tories would be happy with "some nice dull guy" along the lines of Bill Copeland or what Andrew Stewart was supposed to represent. (Remember, they did pick up seats, even after 'the meltdown.')

And regardless of who they nominate, the Libs and Tories will be a little more cautious about who gets to do their candidate's pre-screening interview.

As for rumour mongering. ...
What's this about The Derek approaching the Libs about a possible federal run?

Now that would be a story!

Andrew Stewart is old news. If he was smart enough to disclose his drunk driver conviction, and if Team Burnaby had lessened its arrogance then maybe the outcome would have been different than having a wanna be Mayor tooling around in a red Corvette sporting a free paint job.

And regardless of who they nominate, the Libs and Tories will be a little more cautious about who gets to do their candidate's pre-screening interview.

True and with the Liberals, actually have a nomination meeting where the membership actually gets to vote as to whom becomes the candidate rather than having one given to them.

Ain't going to happen. Why would Corrigan want to run for the federal Liberals? They'll be Opposition and Corrigan will only be one voice out of more than 100.

SOmeone is snorting something funny if he or she figures Corrigan would be stupid enough to run for the federal Liberals.

Lee Rankin couldn't make it, so why would Corrigan?

Approached or was he approached. Or maybe the Corrigan approached by federal Liberals may not necessarily be the mayor!? Given the "neutrality", Kathy Corrigan would have easily become an instant favourite against Peter Julian, but we all know she will not win, neither will her husband.

Back to Bill Cunningham and how he is pulling in federal liberal heavyweights at the time of civic opposition nomination season. That should certainly provide him with some support as to who he would bless as the new mayor prospect against Derek Corrigan and if Richard Lee does decide to step up and take on the mayor, Bill Cunningham will no doubt be in full force to get him elected.

"Approached" or was he approached"

Big deal. Doesn't mean anything other than the nomination committee is gettting to the bottom of the barrel.

So it's Kathy Corrigan MP instead of Kathy Corrigan MLA.

The same aspect remains. If Lee Rankin couldn't make it through a nominaiton with the federal Liberals why would Kathy Corrigan?
She's no doubt left wing and a member of the BC NDP.

"Back to Bill Cunningham and how he is pulling in federal liberal heavyweights at the time of civic opposition nomination season."

That has a to be a joke, right?

Who cares who Bill Cunningham would bless? He's never gone through a nomination and has pretty much everything political given to him.

Richard isn't going to run for Mayor.

If he does, Richard would be better off not having Bill Cunningham around. Let the real political people - the ones who have gone through real political contests at the provincial level and civic level assist Richard.

Actually whoever gets nominated by the opposition against Mayor Corrigan would care. And the city race next door is already enlisting Bill C well before the real election. And just because BCA blessed the mayor incumbent with automatic nomination does not make him all that invisible in the general election.

There is never MP Kathy Corrigan and there will likely never be Kathy Corrigan since neither she or her husband can defeat Peter Julian in a general election. But is turning provincial NDP into federal LIB really that shocking anymore given that the MP next door used to be looked up by provincial NDP's, at least so I believe. But again, any thought of Kathy Corrigan to sit in the opposition back bench is premature since again, since there is still very much a doubt if she can run her own campaign. However weak people would like to claim John Nuraney is, who at the present still represents the Corrigans in Victoria, he was not unseated in 2005, and after eight years of presiding over Corrigan's home riding, maybe he knows nothing about researching, but he certainly knows a thing or two about getting elected.

That's not really enlisting. It's more of Bill C accepting a job. But that's only at the nomination level, not the real meal deal.

"And just because BCA blessed the mayor incumbent with automatic nomination does not make him all that invisible in the general election. "

Who says he was. The federal Liberals have automatic nominations. Bill the C has been the receipient of those.

"There is never MP Kathy Corrigan and there will likely never be Kathy Corrigan since neither she or her husband can defeat Peter Julian in a general election."

Why would she or he? They and Peter Julian are members of the same political party. Why would they consider bumping off an MP
incumbent?

She can, the NDP has alot of resources, and if they see opportunity, they will use it.

He was very lucky to get re-elected in 2005. He lost considerable amount of support compared to 2001. He is going to face re-election again.

His winning the 2009 election is not guaranteed.

Perhaps someone who is suggesting Billy C will endorse a local mayoral candidate would explain what he would get out of meddling in civic affairs here in Burnaby?

That's right. Nothing. There is no way to win any votes by getting involved on any side. It won't happen. That might even be why he has chosen to help an old friend in Vancouver's civic race (so he can stay out of Burnaby).

"She can, the NDP has alot of resources, and if they see opportunity, they will use it."

She can because NDP has alot of resources, or it doesnt matter because NDP has alot of resources. And to win a nomination "all by herself" seems to be a remote possibility which is why she will only run if there is to be a coronation, which will most certainly not happen if her husband loses the next re-election and there is certainly no point staying on this topic since she will continue to stay silent till then while her colleagues will attempt to block other NDP prospects from joining the nomination races.

So is there a person who can defeat her husband barring Richard Lee? Why not? Does Bill C have the resources to remove her husband from city hall, if he can do it against Robertson, who is to believe he couldnt against her husband. What is Bill C to gain from eliminating NDP presence from his riding? Mayor Corrigan will oppose his candidacy as will the remaining BCA councilors. Unless Mayor Corrigan decides to turn liberals federally, he may be more threatening than Bill Siksay who is currently trying to hold on to his seat against Bill C.

THis is a bit confusing. Someone was figuring that Kathy Corrigan would join the federal Liberals to seek nomination. That certainly isn't going to happen since the Corrigans are NDP. So was Lee Rankin but he had a dispute with the NDP and then decided to cross the floor and try for a nomination within the federal Liberals, which obviously didn't work.

Consequently there is no way that either Derek or Kathy would chase after Peter Julian's nomination since he is already MP, and to unseat an incumbent in a nomination when he hasn't done anything to rattle the local NDP is highly unusual.

"So is there a person who can defeat her husband barring Richard Lee? Why not? Does Bill C have the resources to remove her husband from city hall, if he can do it against Robertson, who is to believe he couldnt against her husband."

Robertson is seeking a nomination, he is not at City Hall. Big difference since Burnaby and Vancouver are different in political scope.

If someone thinks Bill C is some kind of power boy, they are sadly mistaken.

" What is Bill C to gain from eliminating NDP presence from his riding?"

You mean the riding he is running in. He does not own it. The voters do.

"Mayor Corrigan will oppose his candidacy as will the remaining BCA councilors."

Doesn't matter too much, since the federal NDP in Burnaby will most certainly keep Bill from taking out Siskay.

"Unless Mayor Corrigan decides to turn liberals federally, he may be more threatening than Bill Siksay who is currently trying to hold on to his seat against Bill C."

That's a fantasy. Why would Corrigan go to the federal Liberals when he is quite comfy in the NDP?

I would correct your statement at the end. It should read.

"Bill C is trying to unseat Bill Siskay". It's not a matter of Bill Siskay trying to hold onto his seat.

It is interesting that you say that, when someone else doesn't apply the same sentence to Richard Lee or Harry Bloy who won in 2005 by narrow margins, just as Bill C lost to Bill Siskay by a seemly narrow margin.
