The last major contender

George Drazenovic, the Burnaby-Douglas Conservative candidate, is still not listed as having filed according to Elections Canada. Local Conservatives are saying that they have, as of yet, not been asked to sign his nomination papers. Candidates require the signatures of 100 eligible voters living in the riding being contested in order to appear on the ballot. The deadline for filing is January 2nd.

As of yet, only NDP candidate Bill Siksay and Liberal candidate Billy Cunningham are on the ballot. The riding will also be contested by a Green candidate, Ray Power, and a Communist candidate, George Gidora.

Hope to see the Greens do well.
With the new funding rules every vote for the Greens is not wasted but an investment in the future resulting in more funding in future elections.
Greens should run under that premise.

Good to see George D's website still has pictures of his campaign headquarters open house from last election.
Is his campaign a train wreck or not.

I'm glad I still have the privilege to cast my F-the-system vote in my riding.

But hey Robert can you do me a favor? Since your blog has a large readership can you post this website on your blog and encourage people to cast their STV vote in Burnaby? Thanks.

George might not have had time to get an office, a campaign team or even the 100 signatures required to get on the ballot.

However, I think his small energy related startup has been in to see David Emmerson about the possibilies of getting research money to continue development work.

Just how much can one guy be expected to do?

Interesting, but there's one basic premise. STV does not nessesarily mean multi-member ridings. The original aspect of STV having multi-member ridings comes from the Citizen's Assembly voting for the Irish model which has multiple member ridings.

In some jurisdictions a single member is the result of an STV vote, and there are a collection of single member ridings. This happens both at the federal and at the provincial/state level.

Try again with STV in a single member format and see what happens.

All this talk about a special vote for STV is just a bunch of crap.
Usually coming from Adrianne Carr who wants STV so that she might scratch out one or two seats.
Would be funny if she didnt get any seats even with STV.
Greens should pursue more important issues like dumping her butt and getting someone more credible to head their party

Adrianne Carr is self serving. She's an amateur that doesn't know what she is talking about half the time.

She is persuing STV for her and the Green's self interest. Has nothing to do with fair representation.

I like single-representative STV constituencies better as well.

But hey anti-fair-representation people: I'm glad you're not the majority.

I notice George D seems to have an office with his poster on the window across the street from Blockbuster Video on Hastings.
Very strategic as his workers can go across the street and rent a video when they figure out he has no chance of even finishing second.

Power should do well with all the support from SFU for the Greens. Hope to see them give George a run for his money for third.

Power couldn't win four polls.

SFU Arts students who keep complaining about tuition increases aren't going to carry him through.

Power is hardly "Green". He's an opportunist.

Do you actually think George is going to win 4 polls

Would if he worked at it. At least he doesn't represent a party which supported a corrupt government.

It's obvious the Conservatives have conceded BD. I understand any funding from the constituency has been cutoff from George.
Not a good thing.
A good example of why our system has to be changed when you see someone hijack a nomination who does not have the support of the party members in the riding.

As a conservative in BD, I doubt very much that the election has been conceded to either the NDP or BC.
It is a bit strange though that the candidate that wanted the nomination so badly last May has done so little since then.

Maybe you are right that the selection process should be changed. However, surely the way it was done by the BD Conservative riding assoc is better than the Liberals do it - by decree form on top.

Actually I would agree......... he should have told everyone he wanted out in the summer.
Not very responsible of him.

Will Ray Power do better than the 3% he got as the PC candidate in '97? Is his main issue still to bring back the death penalty as it was when he ran for the Alliance nomination in '00?

If he can get that or more he will have done well
